Key Strategies Adopted: ‘Come to School’ Program

Research suggests that higher absenteeism correlates with lower graduation rates (Spradlin, Cierniak, Shi, & Chen, 2012). To improve the students’ attendance rates to 80%, the ‘Come to School’ program provides three cycles of interventions to bring magistrates to the school and prevent student from having a truancy case opened against them. In this process, students mean with their deans, receive mentoring, and attend truancy council and court within their school, depending on whether or not they improve their attendance. The program also employs other interventions to address barriers to attending classes. Over the past couple of years, the program has seen great success, and the group has uncovered that one of the magic elements of the success of the program is the relationships that are built with their students throughout the process.
