The Youth Initiative of Adams County presented Kevin West, School District 27J Director of Intervention Services, with the 2017 Youth Initiative Champion Award at their recent Catalyst for Change Breakfast on Friday, September 15, 2017.

The purpose of the Champion Award is to recognize leaders, partners, and organizations who:

  • Demonstrate a strong vision and driving passion around results for kids.
  • Inspire others to work together and set aside individual agendas.
  • Align their time, talent, or treasure to support Cradle to Career Success.
  • Ultimately, the Youth Initiative Champion is the best friend a young person could have.

Kevin served as an active member of the leadership team that led the Safe Schools Healthy Students Grant from 2005 – 2012, which eventually transformed into the Youth Initiative of Adams County Organization we are today. He served as a Board of Director from 2014 – 2016 to help with our successful transition from the incorporated federal grant to a stand alone non-profit.

Throughout his time, Kevin has also been a strong and steadfast advocate of student voice and a key committee member of the Adams County Student Survey Steering Committee. His passion for at risk kids to get a second chance drives him and propels him to be an on-going confidant and “thought partner” to the team in navigating the adaptive challenges of the complex nature of systems change.

“He has reliable humor – and a knack for lightening up this heavy work,” said Becky Hoffman, Executive Director of the Youth Initiative of Adams County. “He has a ready compliment and always empowers the adults working with kids. And ultimately, he consistently ask the question, “how does this help kids” and then works to ensure it happens by all means necessary.”

Past recipients of the award include: Judge Don Quick of the 17th Judicial District; Dave Young, 17th Judicial District Attorney; City of Thornton Police Chief Randy Nelson; Rick Doucett, CEO of Community Reach Center; Valorie Ladwig, Executive Director of the Link; Chris Gdowski, Superintendent of Adams 12 Five Star Schools; and Pastor Kim Skattum and Crossroads Church.

Congratulations Kevin West on the well-deserved recognition!
